Lyrics: CH/R I’m drinking away my tomorrows, I’m searching for the courage I lack I’m staring at a whole world of sorrow, knowing that you’re never coming back V1 I’m sitting in this honky tonk bar, waiting for the sun to go down Knowing I need to have another, before my heart hits the ground CH/R I’m drinking away my tomorrows, I’m searching for the courage I lack I’m staring at a whole world of sorrow, knowing that you’re never coming back V2 I keep thinking I’ll go to that sermon, and maybe I’ll find that holy grail But I’m a weak man without my bourbon, my smokes and my chaser of ale CH/R I’m drinking away my tomorrows, I’m searching for the courage I lack I’m staring at a whole world of sorrow, knowing that you’re never coming back V3 Well the sun it is surely sinking and yes, I’ll have another beer ‘Cause I’ll be here ‘til midnight, just hoping tomorrow disappears CH/R I’m drinking away my tomorrows, I’m searching for the courage I lack I’m staring at a whole world of sorrow, knowing that you’re never coming back knowing that you’re never coming back knowing that you’re never (never, never) coming back

Lyrics: V1 I’m on this road again, the road where love never wins When I told you I was yours and we’d never part I never saw the dark that was there from the start CH/R It took our lives to fall apart, now I’m a ghost to my own heart V2 I’ve lost the thread of the life we knew, And I’m trying hard to stay with you But when I see you standing there, the wind in your hair The sun sets across the sky, and just disappears CH/R It took our lives to fall apart, now I’m a ghost to my own heart V3 And when I go away, I hope and I pray The times we had were good enough, good enough to bear And the vows that we took were good enough to share BR I want you to know I care I want you to know I care I want you to know I care (INSTRUMENTAL) CH/R It took our lives to fall apart, now I’m a ghost to my own heart It took our lives to fall apart, now I’m a ghost to my own heart A ghost, to my own heart
3.
Lyrics: V1 I can’t say that you’ve been out there cheatin’ cause that just wouldn’t be right But I can’t think of one good reason why you’re not here at home with me tonight And I won’t look the other way, if you’re heart has been taken away CH Oh, your words of love blew gently, they took me to my knees But now those words are empty and love is just a cold, cold breeze V2 I can’t say we’ll soon be mending what was broken along the way I can’t tell if you’re better off leavin’ or if you really oughta stay But blame is just another hurtin’ if your heart has been taken away CH Oh, your words of love blew gently, they took me to my knees But now those words are empty and love is just a cold, cold breeze V3 They say that love’s worth fightin’, they say it has it’s little lies But I can’t say I’ll be waitin’ for a love that can’t look me in the eyes ‘Cause I won’t look the other way if your heart has been taken away No, I won’t look the other way if your heart has been given away CH/OUTRO Oh, your words of love blew gently, they took me to my knees But now those words are empty and love is just a cold, cold breeze Now those words are empty and love is just a cold, cold breeze Yes, love is just a cold, cold breeze

Lyrics: V1 When I heard you told your love good bye I turned and drove a thousand miles Just to see if we could mend, our loving ways again Just to spend some time as friends, knowin’ we might never win But here I am again, today CH/REFRAIN Love is so hard to find, why did we change our minds? Why did we ever part, the jealous secrets of the heart, that stay The ones that never go away V2 I drove a thousand miles to know What caused our misery, why was I so blind to see The life in front of me? If I could only say I was wrong to turn away And you were right to leave Would open your heart to me, and tell me what you could not say? ‘Cause here I am again today. CH/REFRAIN Love is so hard to find, why did we change our minds? Why did we ever part, the jealous secrets of the heart, that stay The ones that never go away (INSTRUMENTAL) CH/REFRAIN/OUTRO Love is so hard to find, why did we change our minds? Why did we ever part, the jealous secrets of the heart, that stay The ones that never go away, the ones that never go away Oh how I miss our lovin’ ways

Lyrics: V1 I met her on the Fourth of July, by Christmas she was hanging lights Buying dresses at the store, getting tires for her car Every word seemed so sincere, every time she called me dear Telling me everything was right, telling me just to hold her, tight CH But love to her was all the same, Sleight of hand in a poor man’s game Step on up, lay your money down; step on up, lay your money down She cleaned me out and then left town, taking everything in sight Leaving me in the middle of the night Leaving me in the middle of the night V2 Love was her magic act, stack the deck and don’t look back Queen of hearts all I could see, never showing her hand to me ‘Til she left me standing there, words of love still in the air Smiling as she played the game, leaving me without a dollar, to my name CH But love to her was all the same, Sleight of hand in a poor man’s game Step on up, lay your money down; step on up, lay your money down She cleaned me out and then left town, taking everything in sight Leaving me in the middle of the night Leaving me in the middle of the night BR ‘Cause she’s a cold blooded, double crossing dealer Playing with the hearts of all her lovers Never showing the cards you ought to see Holding all the aces up her sleeve (INSTRUMENTAL) Every word seemed so sincere, every time she called me dear Telling me everything was right, telling me just to hold, her tight CH/OUTRO But love to her was all the same, Sleight of hand in a poor man’s game Step on up, lay your money down; step on up, lay your money down She cleaned me out and then left town, taking everything in sight Leaving me in the middle of the night Leaving me but I guess I’ll be alright

Lyrics: V1 I’ve been hanging around this town too long, feel like I might explode Think I’ll pack up all my memories, they ain’t a heavy load CH Now I’m fifty miles from empty, I’ve got a hundred more to go But there ain’t nothin’ sweeter than that breeze on an open road V2 I started off for Memphis, got stuck in Baton Rouge Now I’m on my way to Austin, with a case of the delta blues CH Still I’m fifty miles from empty, with a hundred more to go But there ain’t nothin’ sweeter than that breeze on an open road V3 And when I get to Texas, with gas enough to spare I’ll be playing this old guitar for whiskey, tips and beer CH/OUTRO And I’ll be fifty miles from heaven with nowhere left to go ‘Cause I’m told there’s nothin’ sweeter than that song at the end of the road No I bet there’s nothin’ sweeter than that song, at the end of the road
7.
Lyrics: V1 I guess I should have known from the start Those late night meetings and lonely boy greetings It would tear us apart But I guess I was hoping, with us eloping A ring would change your heart CH Now it’s truck stop whiskey all night long Trying to forget where we went wrong And this cold beer chaser just can’t erase her Living and loving ways Fill ‘er up, let’s drink to better days V2 Lord knows I tried to make a home But the late night meetings and lonely boy greetings Never did slow down I bet you never knew, how I cared for you And the hurt I carried around CH Now it’s truck stop whiskey all night long Trying to forget where we went wrong And this cold beer chaser just can’t erase her Living and loving ways Fill ‘er up, let’s drink to better days (INSTRUMENTAL) V3 You never saw what those boys took from me And what they took from you With those late night meetings and cash for love greetings I did the best that I could do But I was just another rendezvous CH Now it’s truck stop whiskey all night long Trying to forget where we went wrong And this cold beer chaser just can’t erase her Living and loving ways Fill ‘er up, let’s drink to better days Fill ‘er up, I gotta drive this pain away Fill ‘er up, I gotta drive this pain away
8.
Lyrics: V1 Another morning and I’m in the wrong bed I can hear your voice inside my head Am I awake or in a dream, it doesn’t matter much to me Another road with more lonely lines; dividing hearts, dividing time I drive through days into empty nights, chasing down those big city lights CH Thought you would love me till the stars leave the sky Reach out to me then and tell me why When the sun goes down behind the trees You are all that comforts me V2 Oh how I wish you could see What living like this is doing to me No one to talk to and nowhere to be Freedom is hope and its killing me Think I’ll find me a priest, a way to God’s ear Trade in my freedom for some old fashion fear Find a path to your heart, which one I don’t care Penance or faith, gospel or prayer CH/OUTRO Thought you would love me till the stars leave the sky Reach out to me then and tell me why When the sun goes down behind the trees You are all that comforts me You are all that comforts me
9.
Lyrics: V1 Think I’ll buy me a pine box and lay down inside And listen to my family tell me all the reasons why They put up with my antics, my jokes and all my songs And make them tell me what they’ll do after, I’m gone CH And I’ll listen to their stories, some that I know ‘Cause I need to know what’s in their hearts Before, it’s time to for me to go Before, it’s time to for me to go V2 I’ll invite all our friends and those we hardly knew Tell them there’ll be free drinks, and sandwiches too But first they’ll have to take their turn and talk about a man A man who knows he’s hard to reach, hard to understand CH And I’ll listen to their stories, some that I know ‘Cause I need to know what’s in their hearts Before it’s time for me to go Before it’s time for me to go V3 And when our friends have left with those we hardly knew I’ll climb out of that box and whisper just to you All the things that I feel that have somehow gone unsaid And put my arms around you just lying, in our bed CH Then I’ll listen to your heart, the one that I know ‘Cause I need to know what else is there Before it’s time for me to go Before it’s time for me to go Before it’s time for me to go
10.
Lyrics: V1 When your days get slim and the lights grow dim It’s so good to have your family beside you I’ve been leaving too long, I’m not nearly as strong As the spirit that now seems to guide me CH But I’ve lived a good life and I want you to know That I’d do it all over again I’ve been loved by a few, I’ve seen the devil too Now I’m riding this last, lonely train V2 Well my pain fades away with the love here today When I see all my family beside me I’ll be missing you, you’ll be missing me too But I know in your hearts you will find me CH And I’ve lived a good life and I want you to know That I’d do it all over again I’ve been loved by a few, I’ve seen the devil too Now I’m riding this last, lonely train (INSTRUMENTAL) CH But I’ve lived a good life and I want you to know That I’d do it all over again I’ve been loved by a few, I’ve seen the devil too Now I’m riding this last, lonely train Riding this last train without you Riding this last train without you Waiting at the last stop to find you Waiting at the last stop to find you To find you, to find you, to find you
11.
Lyrics: V1 Here we are back home again Back to your own room again There’s nothing more that the doctors can do So now it’s just me and you And here we are back home again Knowing there’s no time, to pretend I know that you want to stay strong But there’s no need my love to soldier on CH So, close your eyes and let the light come in Close your eyes and let the light come in Close your eyes and let the light come in, again V2 I never knew how this would feel And even now it doesn’t seem real I’m holding you now like never before But I’m letting you go to that other shore So take my hand that I might comfort you Take your rest I’ll be right here with you It’s time to carry your dreams away And know that I will be okay CH2 So, close your eyes and let the light come in Close your eyes and let the light come in Close your eyes and let the light come in, again BR I remember we used to say there are windows behind the stars And if that true, my love I won’t have to look very far, for you (INSTRUMENTAL) CH3 So, close your eyes and let the light come in Close your eyes and let the light come in For your next life is waiting Yes, your next life is waiting, to begin…

about

Review by Bruce Fessier (excerpt):

“Brian Michael Tracy, a poet-turned singer-songwriter from Idyllwild, Calif., has penned an excellent batch of Gram Parsons-influenced country narratives packaged into a clean, austere sound guided by producer Kenneth Gibson. Tracy’s stellar studio band features “jazzgrass” pioneer Barnaby Finch on piano and Marty Rifkin on pedal steel guitar, an instrument he previously showcased while touring with Bruce Springsteen in support of the Boss’s contagious 2006 Pete Seeger tribute, “We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions.” But the songs at their core could be added to the canon of recent recordings by the likes of Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, and Hayes Carll.”

(Bruce Fessier is a Palm Springs,CA-based music journalist who has written about every Coachella and Stagecoach festival for The Desert Sun and USA Today, while also writing music feature stories for Palm Springs Life and newspapers around the country. He earned a CV Music Lifetime Achievement Award for Music Journalism in 2019.)

About the Artist, Brian Michael Tracy:

Acclaimed poet Brian Michael Tracy (www.brianmichaeltracy.com ) has delivered his first full length album of original songs. These songs, dipped in classic country and tinged with Americana, explore the nature of relationships - their hopes, losses, secrets and fears. Sonically it seems they have arrived straight from the solo careers of that country rock supergroup the Byrds, alternating between the straight ahead country of Chris Hillman, the often complex and lush sounds of Gene Clark (think here of his classic album No Other) and the beautiful harmonies captured by Gram Parsons with the then unknown Emmylou Harris on Grievous Angel.

The musical range of the album is impressive and appropriately reflects all of the moods and musings Tracy takes the listener through. From the raucous, ass kicking country of the title track through the haunting sounds of Ghost to My Own Heart and Last Lonely Train to the fragile finale of When the Light Comes In, the music and lyrics take the listener on a true journey. All in all it is an impressive debut from this poet turned singer/songwriter who has enlisted a stellar line up of musicians to accompany him.
